View No. 6: The George Washington Bridge

Watercolor on Linen / 14“ X 19.5”

During Hudson’s second day of sailing, the Half Moon passed the location that was a popular river crossing for Native Americans. The iconic 3,500-foot- long George Washington Bridge would be built there some three centuries later. Opened in 1931, it is a principal link to New York City and New England and is the most heavily travelled bridge in the world. Its 14 lanes carry 102 million cars per year.

At the foot of the bridge is Jeffrey’s Hook Lighthouse, a.k.a. the Li ttle Red Lighthouse, now a City and National Landmark. Across the river and noted by Henry Hudson are the cliffs called the Palisades. They were quarried for many years before also being designated as National Historic Landmarks within a park.
