view no.18, The Esopus Meadows Lighthouse

Watercolor on Linen / 13.5“ X 19.5”

This location, named after the Esopus Indians, was the home of many Native American villages dating back over 3000 years. On the west side, there is a shallow area known as Esopus Meadows, which has a depth of only a few feet at low tide. The Esopus Lighthouse was built here in 1838 to ward off mariners from the shallow mud flats. In the distance was Hudson’s first view of the Catskill Mountains.

After the Highlands, the Catskills are the second range of mountains seen from the river and are part of the 700,000-acre Catskill Park Preserve. Reaching the elevation of 4,180 feet, they are visible from the Hudson River all the way up to Albany.
