view no. 13: Storm King Mountain

Watercolor on Linen / 14“ X 20”

North of Bear Mountain and West Point, lies one of the most iconic natural features of the Hudson River, Storm King Mountain. A proposal in the early 1960s to build a hydro-electric plant on this 1355- foot mountain was challenged and defeated by a group of Hudson Valley citizens. This led to the modern environmental movement which established the legal right of all citizens to voice opinions when projects are proposed that could have a major impact on the environment.

Across the river another Native American village existed which would become the town of Cold Spring. It was to become an early ship-building center and also the home of West Point Foundry where arms for the Union were manufactured during the Civil War. A National Landmark the archaeological excavation is open to the public.
