View no.11, the Bear Mountain Bridge
Watercolor on Linen / 12“ X 18”
About halfway up the Highlands segment of the river and just north of Bear Mountain, the Patriots built two other important War of Independence forts -Montgomery and Clinton. They also laid a huge cast iron chain across the river, to block English ships from passing. In 1924 the Bear Mountain Bridge was built in this same location. It was the first vehicular bridge built south of Albany and the longest suspension bridge in the world at that time.
Also shown in this painting, is one of the Coast Guard icebreakers which, since 1931, have maintained a 32-foot-deep navigable channel for the extensive commercial shipping that existed and still occurs on the river today.
